The ancient Greek city of Sparta is the birthplace of Kratos in the God of War series. Due to this fact, Kratos has a deep pride in the city - however, it was his resolute refusal to let the Spartan Army be defeated by the Barbarian King that led to his fateful decision to serve Ares. When questioned by his wife as to when the bloodshed will stop, Kratos replies - "Whenever the glory of Sparta is known throughout the land". Even after his betrayal, Kratos still holds Sparta above the other cities, telling an injured soldier in God of War II - "You can still hold a sword. Spartans do not surrender!"

Kratos himself is known as the 'Ghost Of Sparta', once again emphasising his close connection with the city.
