Athens was a major city in Ancient Greece, and the chosen city protected by the goddess Athena. It features in God of War as the second area in the game, accessed after Kratos docks his boat from the Aegean Sea. The city is under attack by Ares, and therefore Athena employs Kratos to help defend her city and also give Kratos the opportunity to take his revenge against the God of War.
